DC has one of the most layered public-education systems in the country. Between traditional public schools and charter schools, there are graduation pathways like AP, IB, CTE, and Dual Enrollment. There are protections like IEPs and 504 plans. There are application processes, lotteries, financial-aid forms, and dozens of acronyms that every family is somehow expected to learn on their own.
Most of how that system actually works lives in policy documents, board memos, and government PDFs. They're public, but they're written for the people who write them — not for the families who live with the decisions.
This library is here to close that gap.
I started building it during my time as the 2025–2026 Strategic Communications Fellow at the DC State Board of Education. Every guide here started as a real question from a real DC family — a parent who didn't know how the lottery worked, a student trying to apply to college without a counselor, a family asking what their rights were after an IEP meeting. I wrote down the answers in plain language, in both English and Spanish, and put them somewhere everyone can find them.
There are 22 guides, covering the decisions families are actually making: graduation requirements, school choice, special education, financial aid, college applications, and what to do when something at school doesn't feel right. Every one of them is free, in English and Spanish, designed to read on a phone or print and bring to a meeting. No login, no paywall, no tracking.
I built this for the families I grew up around — working families, first-generation families, Spanish-speaking families, families balancing two jobs and three kids and a system that doesn't always make space for them. You shouldn't need a policy degree to advocate for your child. You shouldn't have to teach yourself the rules at midnight on a school night. The information should just be there.

DC tiene uno de los sistemas de educación pública más complejos del país. Entre escuelas públicas tradicionales y escuelas chárter, hay caminos de graduación como AP, IB, CTE e Inscripción Doble. Hay protecciones como IEP y planes 504. Hay procesos de solicitud, loterías, formularios de ayuda financiera, y decenas de siglas que se espera que cada familia aprenda por su cuenta.
La mayor parte de cómo funciona ese sistema vive en documentos de política, memos de la junta y PDFs gubernamentales. Son públicos, pero están escritos para quienes los escriben — no para las familias que viven con las decisiones.

Empecé a construirla durante mi tiempo como Becario de Comunicaciones Estratégicas 2025–2026 en la Junta de Educación del Estado de DC. Cada guía aquí comenzó como una pregunta real de una familia real de DC — un padre que no sabía cómo funcionaba la lotería, una estudiante tratando de postular a la universidad sin un consejero, una familia preguntando cuáles eran sus derechos después de una reunión de IEP. Escribí las respuestas en lenguaje sencillo, en inglés y español, y las puse en un lugar donde todos puedan encontrarlas.
Hay 22 guías, que cubren las decisiones que las familias realmente toman: requisitos de graduación, elección escolar, educación especial, ayuda financiera, solicitudes universitarias, y qué hacer cuando algo en la escuela no se siente bien. Todas son gratis, en inglés y español, diseñadas para leerse en un celular o imprimirse y llevarse a una reunión. Sin inicio de sesión, sin pago, sin rastreo.
Construí esto para las familias con las que crecí — familias trabajadoras, familias de primera generación, familias hispanohablantes, familias que equilibran dos trabajos, tres hijos y un sistema que no siempre les hace espacio. No debería necesitar un título en política para abogar por su hijo. No debería tener que enseñarse las reglas a medianoche en una noche escolar. La información debería simplemente estar ahí.
